Insects Photo Click 4: African Monarch

The Adventures Of...

Danaus chrysippus

Photographed in Malta.

The African Monarch also called, Plain Tiger and African Queen, is a widespread species found in Asia, Australia and Africa. It is a regular migrant to Southern Europe, including the Maltese Islands, and is doing so, in ever increasing numbers.

Photographed in Sicily.

Like many of the species in this subfamily, Danainae, the caterpillars feed on plants in the genus Asclepias, Milkweeds. These plants contain toxic compounds, which are often consumed and stored, making the species, unpalatable to most predators. As a result, the species’ coloration is widely mimicked by other species of butterflies.

Photographed in Malta.
