The Birds-of-Paradiseππ.
Birds-of-paradise have long been the subject of fascination. The males are adorned with some of the most elaborate plumages in the avian world. They are members of the family Paradisaeidae of the order Passeriformes, and ironically the closest related birds are crows. There are 45 known species, divided into 17 genera.
The fascination in these birds can be witnessed in tribal people who hunted them to use their plumes for their traditional, elaborate headgears. Much later the first European explorers discovered these incredible birds, and they were so unique, that the initial specimens that were delivered to the museums, were thought to be hoaxes, birds put together from different species.
The majority of the species are found in New Guinea, eastern Indonesia and eastern Australia. Most species are confined to dense rainforest habitats. Their diet consists predominantly of fruit and to a lesser extent arthropods.
In this page I am sharing photos taken by myself, depicting some of the species that I have observed personally. I am hoping you enjoy this page and in return helps you to understand the treasures nature has gifted us to observe and protect.
