Birds Photo Click 63: African Wattled Lapwing.

Vanellus senegallus

Photographed in Kenya.

The African wattled lapwing is a resident breeder in most of sub-Saharan Africa, except in the rainforests zones. Although it is a resident bird, there is some seasonal movements, within its distribution range. These movements are typically nomadic and are directly related to the rainy season.

Typical of many Lapwing species, it breeds in wet lowland habitats. The African Wattled Lapwing prefers damp grasslands to breed, but it often feeds in drier habitats, including parks and golf courses.

It feeds on insects and other invertebrates, which it picks from the ground.

Photographed in Ethiopia.
